Jack M. Buffat, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

He was born in Pocatello, Idaho to Jean Emile Buffat and Barbara McCardell Buffat on November 17, 1938. He grew up as the only son with two sisters; Barbara Jean and Vickie Kaye. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1956. He married Lolane Schiess on August 3, 1957 and they had two children; Mark and Cari. They later divorced in 1973 after 15 years of marriage. He then married Verona Russell on March 11, 1994 who has a daughter Lisa Marie Russell. Jack and Verona have many cherished memories including hunting and fishing together and weekly fish or steak dinners on the BBQ. They have been together 40 plus years.

Jack worked for Union Pacific Railroad, Milestone Incorporated - Blackfoot, Idaho, and Floors by Ghan (mentored by Dale Mann). He then ventured out on his own in the construction industry as a tile contractor, owning and operating Buffat Tile, where he shared his talent and gift with many individuals and businesses for over 50 years. His craftsmanship was unforgettable and incredible!

Jack’s passions of life were hunting, fishing, and skiing. Jack was one of the most avid and well-known goose hunters in Eastern Idaho. He spent many years goose hunting on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation and was known as one of the best shooters that many had ever seen and shared this talent with others. Another favorite pastime was spent with his fishing buddies on the American Falls Reservoir and the Snake River catching thousands of fish on his “Buffat Special” fishing lures but never catching the one he had hoped for (Walter–20 plus lbs.) He is credited with teaching many sportsmen how to navigate the river with their boats. At one time in Jack’s life, he owned six boats at the same time. Yes, he was passionate about this sport! Jack also formed a bond with a special group of friends while he was a ski instructor, on the Ski Patrol, and Head of the Ski School at Skyline Ski Resort (now known as Pebble Creek). He was a certified ski instructor over 60 years by the Professional Ski Instructors of America and a member of The Veteran Ski Instructors Alliance. These friendships continued into his later years; skiing until he was 84 years old. He enjoyed these activities with his family and many, many friends. He was quite the outdoorsman, socialite, and some who have called him “the legend.”

In 1993, Jack chose, with Verona’s and his family’s support, to live a life of sobriety. He was successful in his 31 plus years which brought him much joy and happiness. He shared this joy sponsoring many to become sober as well. In years to come, the highlights of his life were the holidays, family dinners and activities with family and friends.

Jack is survived by his wife Verona, children Mark Buffat (Tanna), Cari Minnesota (Larry), and step-daughter Lisa Russell; grandchildren Brooke Buffat, Blake Buffat, Brittannia Smith, Brock Buffat, Braxton Buffat, Jill Hakes, Jake Minnesota, Jared Minnesota, Jade Von Schriltz, Gunner Von Schriltz, and Edie Edmo; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on July 7, 2024 at FMC Park (10811 N. Rio Vista RD, Pocatello, Idaho) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (open house) where family and friends will come together to honor his memory.

He will forever be remembered as saying “it is what it is”, “give me a holler”, and “catch ya later.”
