Jack Leathers

Jack David Leathers, 73, passed away from complications of a lengthy illness at his eldest son's home near French Camp on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
Visitation will be at Culpepper Funeral Home (11748 Hwy 35 North; Kosciusko, MS) on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A family-only (private) service will be held on Friday. Burial will follow at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Kilmichael.
Jack was born in Osceola, Arkansas, to I. B. and Pearline Leathers. He grew up near Dyess and graduated from Dyess High School. Jack liked to tell people this was the school Johnny Cash graduated from. He served in the U. S. Army from May 15, 1968, until May 13, 1977, in the Army Security Agency. He was stationed in Vietnam and Augsburg, Germany.
There was never any doubt that God called Jack to be a farmer, and he was deeply rooted in the land he cherished. In 1977, he started farming near Pickens planting primarily soybeans, cotton, and corn. He loved watching things grow. In the spring he was often seen, early in the mornings, crouched down in the field, gently digging in the dirt, monitoring the seed's sprouting progress.
Jack was known for his great sense of humor and quick comebacks. Most of all, he was a hard worker and left a legacy of helping and serving others. Over the years, he has assisted people in many ways.
In addition to farming, Jack managed Tri-County Cooperative for almost twenty years, spending countless hours serving and investing in the local farm communities. His expertise and opinions were highly regarded, and his sincere care for people was evident. Upon leaving the Coop, Jack commenced a new career, learning the intricacies of managing oil fields.
While Jack loved farming, his second love was the Town of Pickens. Jack's volunteer work to better his community started in 1982. He never grew tired of serving the people of this town. The Town of Pickens recognized his work with a service award on December 12, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his father, Irtes B. Leathers; his mother, Pearline D. Leathers; and his brother, Jimmy D. Leathers.
Survivors include his wife, Laura J. Leathers; children: Robert D. Leathers (Meredith), Eric L. Leathers (Heather), Emily B. Crews (Steven), and Paul A. Leathers (Emily). Grandchildren: Eli Leathers, Clayton Leathers, Abby Hutton (Morgan), Waylon Leathers, and Forrest Leathers.
His siblings are Bobby Leathers (Ruby), Barbara Enzor (Dan), Donna Burt (Harold), Pat Williams (Dale), Danny Leathers, and nephews and nieces.
