Jack W. Mead, affectionately known as "Speedy," passed away on November 5, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on May 5, 1937, in Elwood, Indiana, to the late Carl and Mabel Mead. Jack was a reliable and cherished figure in his community. He was a dedicated family man, a dependable friend, and a hard-working individual with a love for life. On October 30, 1954 he married Mary Haynes and she preceded him in death on November 13, 2010.
Jack dedicated 33 years of service to both Chrysler in Kokomo and Steel Slitting in Elwood and was a former member of the Elwood Moose Lodge. His commitment to his work was unwavering, and his colleagues knew they could always rely on him. He was an avid softball player and even started a league in Elwood. Jack's love for cards, particularly euchre, was well-known, and he enjoyed participating in horseshoe tournaments. His harmonica playing brought joy to many, and he was often seen picking up his grandchildren from school and treating them with a sugary surprise, a testament to his love for family.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Rosemary (Rod) Collins and Tammy (Dana) Miller, and his son, Jackie Mead. He was a proud grandfather to Steven (Chelsey) Casas, Samantha Melling, and Adrienne (Daniel) Benn; great grandchildren, Cayden, Cameron, Kinsley, Kennedy, and Kambry; and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mead; his parents, Carl and Mabel Mead; his daughter-in-law, Teresa Mead; and several siblings.
A viewing will be held for Jack at Dunnichay Funeral Home, located at 1113 South Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana, 46036, on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 12:00 pm EST. This will be followed by a funeral service at the same location at 2:00 pm EST. Rev. Roger Gardner will officiate, and burial will follow in Knox Chapel Cemetery in Fairmount.
We invite all who knew and loved Jack to share their memories and upload photos to his memorial page. Jack's life was marked by reliability, love for his family, and a passion for his hobbies. Let us honor his memory by sharing stories that reflect these qualities.
