Jack Robert Shields, 81, of Sylva, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Skyland Care Center after experiencing a period of declining health. Born on April 3, 1944, in Waynesville, North Carolina, Jack was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a devoted public servant.
A man of many talents, Jack explored numerous professions throughout his life, but he found his calling in law enforcement. He served with dedication in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office under the leadership of the late Sheriff Fred Holcombe, leaving a legacy of integrity and commitment to his community.
Jack's heart belonged to his cherished family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Jessie Cagle Shields, whose partnership was the cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind two beloved daughters, Lois Danner (Wiley) and Teresa Cabe (Mickey). His pride and joy, his granddaughters Jessica Dills (Mickey) and Devon Danner-Allison (Derek), were lights in his life. His four great-grandchildren, Weston, Avalee, Elanee, and Darian, brought him immeasurable joy and laughter. Jack is also survived by his brother, Gary Shields of Franklin, whose bond he treasured dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, W.K. (Bill) Shields and Clara Kiser Shields, and his dear brother, Gene Shields, whose memories he held close to his heart.
Visitation services will be held from 12 to 2 PM at Appalachian Funeral Services, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM officiated by Reverend Eddie Stillwell and Reverend Eugene Ridley. Jack will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Franklin, North Carolina, where he will find eternal peace in the embrace of the mountains he loved.

Jack's spirit will forever remain within the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His unwavering dedication to his family and community will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
The family would like to thank the dedicated and amazing staff for the years of care that was provided for Jack during his stay at Skyland Care Center in Sylva.
