Terry Shields Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Keplinger Funeral Home on Feb. 3, 2026.
Terry David Shields, 86, passed away at on January 31, 2026 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Hartford City on November 22, 1939 to Howard Max Shields, Sr. and Adah Mae (Sims) Shields. Both his parents preceded him in death.

Terry graduated from Hartford City High School in 1957. He married the love of his life, Barbara Lou (Goodspeed) on December 22, 1961 in Hartford City.

After graduating, Terry worked at Rex Swoveland Service Station, known as "Rex's Pure Oil," and later retired from B Snell and Son. Always industrious, he rarely rested-often juggling two or three jobs at once. Terry spent many years detailing cars, mowing lawns, and delivering flowers for Foister's Flowers.

He was a dedicated member of Grace Methodist Church.

Terry loved the outdoors and took pride in growing tomatoes. He enjoyed playing cards, buying lottery tickets, and having coffee with friends at Burger King. Feeding the birds brought him joy, as did taking evening drives with his beloved wife, Barbara.

Known for his warm personality and kindness, Terry never met a stranger. He was generous, always wearing a smile, and took time to greet friends with a hug and a friendly word. Family meant everything to him, and he cherished making memories and spending quality time with his loved ones.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Barbara Lou Shields of Hartford City; son, David "Dave" C. (wife, Lisa) Shields of Syracuse, IN; daughter, Christina "Chris" Lynn (husband, Darin) Patrick of West Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Andrew (wife, Brittany) Shields, Brady (wife, Samantha) Shields, Landen Bishop, Corey Woolridge, Kali Woolridge and Owen (wife, Paige) Patrick; great-grandchildren, River Patrick, Marlee Patrick, Allister Shields, Abigail Shields, Oliver Shields and Miriam Shields; several nieces and nephews.

Terry is also preceded in death by his brother, Howard Max Shields, Jr and grandchild, Lauren Shields

Funeral service for Terry will be at 2 pm on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Grace Methodist Church, 312 W. Washington St., Hartford City, IN with Pastor Jeannie Winter officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Muncie.
