The eldest son of Russell and Kristen, Jack was a steady strength in his family and constant pleasure to his parents. He was open about his love of and pride in his father and mother. His devotion, loyalty and affection to them was evident to all who knew him and will remain treasured by his parents all their days. The blessing and light he was to them will forever outweigh the grief they now carry.
He was a wonderful brother to his siblings and a hero to his niece Mary Wells. The bond between these brothers and sisters had a closeness and enjoyment that was uniquely beautiful. They delighted in being near one another – laughing, loving, kidding, dreaming, working – building a bond both uncommon and remarkable. Jack's irreplaceable space in that relationship will be forever remembered and honored by his siblings, who remain grateful for the privilege of holding such a treasured place in his life.
Jack was surrounded by a large and extraordinary extended family who were a steady presence in his life. In return for their constant love and support, he gave them his best hugs, his brightest smiles, and the kind of memories they will carry with them always – reminders of the warmth and goodness he brought into their lives.
It is hard to capture just how meaningful Jack's presence was in every space he occupied. He was a grounding and inspiring force among his friends and within his church, school and community. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Jack enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was also an exceptional athlete competing in baseball, basketball, and football. Among many other honors and accolades, Jack was presented the Football Captain Award for his leadership at the quarterback position in his junior year of high school. His coach's only critique was that he trade some of his humility for a little bit of cockiness. In all of these endeavors, Jack enjoyed them most when he was surrounded by his friends who played such a meaningful role in his life.
In every friendship and role, Jack led and loved with integrity, humor, and strength. He was always ready to help, unfailingly respectful, courageous in difficult moments, and carried an unforgettable, uplifting smile. We felt steadier when Jack was in the room, stronger when he was on the field, and better simply because he was a part of us. He had a way of making everything brighter and we are all the better for having known and loved him.
Among his many skills, Jack was possibly foremost a farmer. Aside from a few younger years when he wanted to be both a cowboy singer AND a farmer, he knew even before he could see over the steering wheel of most of the equipment (which he was already operating) that farming was a calling of God on his life. Named 2024 Future Farmer of the Year, Jack understood hard work and long work hours and never backed down from either of them. He loved the familiar things of the land his family farmed, things that had been worn in by good men, men he could trust. Following the example of his father and grandfather and those that came before them, he became one of those men you could trust – to work hard, to show up, to stand on and for truth, to do what needed to be done to provide for his family, friends, and community. On the farm as in other areas of his life, Jack added to the value of what others had built. He knew that God had called him to labor for the good of others and he counted it a privilege to do that alongside the men who raised him.
Jack was God's gift to us – so rare and cherished that it's hard to imagine life on this side of heaven without him beside us each day. Every moment we have had to love him taught us something new about joy: today it teaches us that joy can live right next to sorrow.
Through our sorrow, we will wait for that joy to find us again – moving through the places he once walked, inhabiting the spaces he filled, loving those he loved, and working where his hands once worked. We will linger in the daily reminders of the gift it was to love him. We will find peace in the quiet Jesus gives, knowing that Jack rests safely in the arms of the God who has always held him.
With a humbleness, confidence, and strength well beyond his age, Jack Wiggins lived his life standing on the Rock of ages. We will live waiting for the day we see him again, clinging to that same Rock, trusting it to cleft for us.
