Jacqueline “Jackie” Winfree Ladd, 94, of Durham, began her walk on the streets of gold with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at her family’s home. Born in Durham, NC on March 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Odell Gaston and Mattie Allen Winfree. In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Ross Ladd, Sr., and great-grandson Wyatt Benjamin.
In 1949, Jackie placed her trust fully in Christ, embracing the truth that salvation comes by grace through faith alone. As it is written, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God—not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Jackie faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. In Anchorage, Alaska, she worked as a secretary at the Church of the Open Door and with Arctic Mission Inc. Upon returning to Durham, she served at Faith Baptist Church as adult choir director, church secretary, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher for junior girls. She later continued her ministry at the former Gospel Center, teaching Sunday School, singing in the adult choir, and working in AWANA. In her later years, she joyfully visited the elderly in her church and welcomed visiting speakers into her home. She also shared her faith through her work as owner and operator of the Village Book & Bible Center in Wellons Village, where her business became a ministry to many in the community.
She is survived by her brother, Bert Winfree (Terry) of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Joye Ladd Phipps (Steve) of Durham; son, Donald Ladd, Jr. (Karen) of Durham; grandchildren, Bradley Phipps (Kyla), Chaplain (MAJ) Brian Phipps (Jenna), Becky Phipps, Brent Phipps (Brooke), and Jennifer Martin (Stuart); and nine great-grandchildren: Zachary, Kayleigh, Westley, Katie Joye, Jackson, Isaac, Camden Jax, Amelia, and Carter Grey.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Hudson Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel.
Officiating will be Chaplain (MAJ) Brian Phipps and Reverend Hugh O’Shields.
Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bradley Phipps, Brent Phipps, Stuart Martin, Zachary Phipps, Westley Phipps, and Eric Hester.
Flowers are appreciated, or memorial donations may be made in Jackie’s name to the Durham Rescue Mission or Gideon’s International.
