Obituary for Jacquelyn Christine Schmig
Jacquelyn Christine Schmig, age 77, passed away peacefully at home in Locust Grove, Virginia, on July 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 19, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas, Jacquelyn was the daughter of the late Harry Cornell Sr. and Irma L. Stucky Morse. She dedicated her professional life to serving others, retiring as Head Secretary for the Inspector General/Army. Her retirement was memorable, her husband, Virgil, recalled waiting outside while coworkers helped carry out her office chair, retiring it right along with her.
Jacquelyn married the love of her life, Virgil Edward Schmig, after meeting on a blind date. Just six months later, they were married, a bond that lasted 58 years and 10 months. At the time, Virgil was serving in the Navy and had just returned from a 15-month tour in Vietnam. Once they married, he made the decision to leave the military, believing that being present and supportive was what a true partner should do. They did everything together, except fishing, which Jacquelyn proudly avoided.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a doting grandmother. Jacquelyn is survived by her husband, Virgil Schmig; her daughter, Christa Stevenson, and son-in-law, Leonard; her grandchildren, Gabrielle Jones and Austin Jones; and her brothers, Harry Morse Jr. and Joseph Morse.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Morse Sr.; mother, Irma Morse; and brother, James Morse.
Jacquelyn had a deep love for animals and treated her seven Great Danes as if they were her children. She also had a special fondness for horses and had a lifelong soft spot for Eeyore, the lovable, donkey from Winnie the Pooh. Her pets brought her comfort, joy, and unconditional love throughout her life.
In her later years, Jacquelyn bravely faced dementia, but even as her memory faded, her heart remained full. One of her favorite playful sayings during that time was, "Don't make me come over there and kick your A," a reflection of her spunky spirit and enduring sense of humor. She loved her soda like it was water and brought laughter and love to everyone who knew her.
Virgil, her devoted husband, said it best: "You cannot put it into words." Jacquelyn was more than a wife, she was a best friend, a partner in every sense, and the heart of their family. She will be deeply missed.
