DEFIANCE - James "Jim" A. Ankney, age 76, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 1, 2025, at CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.
Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who deeply loved his family and community. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Brenda Ankney; his son, Jeff (Christine) Ankney of Ney, Ohio; his daughter, Kim (Shawn) Rhodes of Napoleon, Ohio; his cherished grandchildren, Jake (Jena) Ankney, Tessa Rhodes, Anna Ankney and Tate Rhodes; and his sister Karen Ankney of Defiance, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Margene Ankney.
He spent his career at General Motors in Defiance where he was known as "Speed". He worked with pride and retired after 33 years of service. Upon retirement, he never slowed down, helping build both of his children's custom homes as well as his grandson's first classic car, a 1956 Chevy. Jim also blessed the hallways and classrooms of Good Samaritan Schools through his duties as a janitor where he found great joy supporting students and staff. His love for the community shown bright through his 40 year service as a volunteer firefighter with Noble Township Fire Department, a role he deeply valued.
A passionate car enthusiast, Jim loved restoring classic cars with his son and grandson and never missed a chance to attend a car show or cruise in with one of his Model A Fords, where he enjoyed sharing stories and swapping ideas with cherished friends in the classic car community. His witty sense of humor and quick comebacks were well-known and he never missed the opportunity to brag about his family, of whom he was incredibly proud.
Jim will be remembered for his warmth, humor, strong work ethic and unwavering support for those he loved. Whether in the stands at a game, enjoying a car show or simply spending quality time catching up, he was always his grandchildren's biggest fan.
