James Arns Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home on Dec. 31, 2025.
James S. Arns, Jr., age 65, a resident of 100 North Lincoln Street in Westmont, passed away on December 29, 2025. He was born on November 19, 1960 in Hinsdale, IL.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and James Arns, Sr., and his grandparents, Alice and Andrew Glajsek, Mabel and Peter Arns.
He is survived by his brother, Gregg Arns; his nephews, Joshua Arns, Erik Arns, and Alex Arns, and his niece, Amanda Egan.
Jim was a gifted musician from an early age. He first sat down at the piano at just four years old, and by age thirteen he had already composed the Westmont High School anthem. He went on to study music in college, attending Illinois Benedictine College and later earning his master's degree from Northwestern University.
Jim spent several years teaching at Downers Grove North and South High Schools. In addition to his work as an educator, he served as a music director and organist at numerous local churches, including St. Isaac Jogues Parish in Hinsdale, St. Cletus Parish in LaGrange, St. Margaret Mary Parish, and SS. Peter & Paul Parish in Naperville.
In the 1970s, Jim attended his first Sweet Adelines International event, an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for competitive singing. He went on to become a seven-time Master Director. Renowned for his musical abilities and leadership, Jim was sought after by ensembles around the world, many of whom turned to him to help them grow and excel.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 4, 1:00-5:00 PM at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 5, 9:30 AM at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.
