Mr. James Malachi Askins, 75, departed this earthly life on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
James, affectionately called "Sonny" by family and friends, was born on January 3, 1949, in Timmonsville, South Carolina, to the late Lillie Mae Ashley Askins and Malachi Askins. He attended the public schools of Florence County and pursued his secondary education at Florence-Darlington Technical College, in welding. James was employed with CSX Corporation until his retirement.
James was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of several bike clubs in his younger years. In addition to being an enthusiast he was also a devoted member of Morning Side Masonic Lodge, Prince Hall Affiliated.
On June 3, 1972, he was united in holy matrimony to Lela Mae Shannon Askins and this union was blessed with three children, Michael, Sonya, and Monica.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Lela Mae Shannon Askins and sister, Mattie Mae Askins Haynesworth.
Left to cherish his memories are: one son, Michael (LaTawnya) Askins, of Odenton, Maryland; three daughters, Sonya Askins, Monica Askins, and Jamelynn Lewis, of Florence, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Katron Askins, Xavier Askins, and Tristan McAllister; three brothers, Nathaniel (Thumbelina) Askins, James Lee (Pastor Claudia) Askins, and Calvin Askins; four sisters, Lilly Bell Daniels, Josephine (James) Kirkland, Susan Gail Askins, and Janet Askins; four brothers-in-law, Lever Harrell, Willie (Shirley) Harrell, James Ray Harrell, and Cleveland (Catherine) Harrell; two sisters-in-law, Betty (Nelson) Jeffrey and Harriett Harrell; one aunt Iris Gladden, of Timmonsville, South Carolina; a brother from another mother, Otis (Betty) Nero; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
