James "Arthur" M. Austin, affectionately known by his family as Arthur, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, in
Newport News, VA, at the age of 74. Born on August 20, 1950, in Nash County, NC, Arthur lived a life of service, dedication, and love that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A proud graduate of Huntington High School's Class of 1968, Arthur went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Norfolk State College. Soon after, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. Throughout his military career, Arthur exemplified honor and integrity. He continued his service dedication to others through his work as an Addiction Therapist dedicating over 40 years of service in helping veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton, VA; and he received recognition and appreciation for his personal sacrifices made in responding to the "Call of Our Nation" during the Persian Gulf Crisis.
Known to many as Jim, Arthur was recognized not only for his dedication to his work but also for the personal passions that enriched his life. He was a very sharp dresser who always smelled of his signature body oils; Arthur had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He was an avid football fan of the Washington Commanders, relishing each game with enthusiasm. He found great joy in spending time with his beloved son, Joshua, creating lasting memories through laughter, shared meals, and simple moments together. Surrounded by family, good food, and the warmth of home, these were the times he treasured the most.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Velvet Austin; his sister, Gwendolyn Outerbridge; and his brother, William Austin, Arthur leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. He is survived by his son, Joshua Austin; his sister, Linda Wilson; his dear aunts, Christin Elliott- Phillips and Mary Ann Richie of Baltimore; sister-in-law, Brenda Austin; nieces Tiffany Outerbridge, Monique Outerbridge, and India Bagley; nephews Dominique Outerbridge (Dawn), William Austin Jr. (Nique), Hodijah Murphy-Bey (Nicole), and Douglas Battle, Jr. (Jennifer); and his sister-cousin, Selena Wallace (Baltimore). His life was enriched by a host of great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Among the many blessings in his life, he treasured the unwavering friendship with Sadie, Emmanuel Sheafe, DJ, Quinton, and Sade, not merely friends, but chosen family who stood beside him through life's seasons. Their presence brought him a deep sense of belonging and love, and the time they shared held a quiet, lasting significance that he carried in his heart always and forever.
Arthur's life serves as a testament to the power of kindness, loyalty, and dedication. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
