James Autry Obituary

Musician, husband, son, father, grandfather, friend, and Social Worker James David Autry, 77, of Augusta, GA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, after a long and courageous battle with a prolonged illness.

He was born January 6, 1949, in Havre de Grace, MD, a son of the late Velmon Autry and Ellen Autry. For over 30 years, Jim served the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities where he supported, mentored and advocated for state residents with developmental disabilities. Jim served all of his 30 years of employment at Gracewood State School and Hospital. He built many long-lasting relationships with the clients he served, their families and his co-workers. He was relied upon for his compassionate approach to care, his positive/encouraging demeanor and his strong support for disability rights.

In addition to serving for the good of our community, Jim was also a musician. He played the saxophone in many bands over more than a thirty year period of time. He had the privilege of playing with some of the greats, including James Brown on a few occasions. His love for music could not be eclipsed. He often put in just as many hours after work playing music as he did working during the week. His love for music afforded him the opportunity to travel, make lifelong friends, and spread joy and his of uproarious sense of humor to those around him.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmon Autry and Carry Autry.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara Rickerson Autry; one son, Jason David Autry of Augusta, Georgia; one daughter, Megan Kate Dexter (Chris Dexter) of Evans, Georgia; two grandchildren, Ava Dexter and Connor Dexter; one brother, Larry Autry (Avis Autry), along with many other family and friends who will miss him dearly.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. Our family greatly appreciates all of the phone calls, messages, visits and thoughts that we have received from those who loved Jim. He was one of the kindest and funniest fellas you'd ever meet and he left this world a better place upon his departure.
