JAMES PREUS Obituary

JAMES B. PREUS
SEPTEMBER 10, 1931 - JULY 9, 2023
Roseville, MN - James (Jim) Burchard Preus, 91, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023. He was born September 10, 1931, in Minneapolis. He attended North High School and went on to the University of Minnesota, where he received his B.A. in music education, and a Ph.D. in Psychology.
He served in the military as a member of the United States Air Force Band. After returning from duty, he worked at the University as an assistant professor, and later as director of admissions and records.
Jim was an avid musician, playing alto saxophone with jazz bands, clarinet in the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, and bassoon in the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra. He played in a quintet regularly and looked forward to music camp each summer. He enjoyed time outdoors, as a fly fisherman and as a hunter.
In retirement, Jim and wife Sherry built a home in Sante Fe, New Mexico, where they spent many years enjoying time with friends, and participating in the vibrant local music community.
Jim was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Sherry, and his sister, Eloise. He is survived by his daughter Diane, son Steven (Stefani), stepdaughter Claire (Brad), stepson Daniel, and grandchildren Noah, Sophia, Whitney, Samantha, Alex, Brenna, and Brooke.
Jim will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in October. Details for a reception to follow will be posted on his Facebook page.

Jim played Bassoon with the Golden Valley Orchestra for a short time. We sat next to each other as I am the first clarinet. Such a wonderful man, gentleman and musician. I will miss you Jim.

I called him "Reverend", as he was from a family of Lutheran preachers from MN. He was a fine, quiet man straight out of Lake Woebegone.

Many fond memories of Jim. Played music with him on bassoon (me on clarinet) in orchestral and chamber music settings. He was a fine musician and a true gentleman. I will miss him.
