James Robert Backes; age 72 of Auburn Hills passed away suddenly on May 4, 2025. He was a dedicated husband, loving father, and an especially delightful grandpa.
He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 7, 1953, the son of Robert Backes and Carol Lorraine Backes. He was known by his family and friends as a golf enthusiast, who loved music, and playing guitar. He was successful in retail merchandising and sales at a young age and continued his career at a regional and national level.
He was a devoted husband to his wife Judy of nearly 46 years, and cherished their travels and activities with family and friends. As a father, he enjoyed being involved in his children's activities, including sports, thrift shopping, and the outdoors. He spent his time as a grandfather listening to stories, being silly, and playing Legos. He had a great sense of humor, cared about
others, and enjoyed having fun.
Beloved husband of Judith Ann Dorsch Backes for 45 years; loving father of Aaron (Elizabeth) Backes, Elliott (Megan) Backes, Audrey (Jack) Hemlinger, and the late Ethan Backes; proud grandfather of Fiona, Brooke, Sullivan, Mallory, and Julie; dear brother of Victoria (Michael) Campbell, Karen Backes, and Mark (Leslie) Backes; brother-in-law of John (Jaqueline) Dorsch,
Glenn (Dorothy) Dorsch, Joan (Dale) Gerber, William (Ceila) Dorsch, Carl (Cheryl) Dorsch, Marion Pender, Janet (Terry) Huff, and Laurie Stein. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial mass will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025 – 11:00 AM, the family will receive family and friends beginning at 9:30AM at St. Owen Catholic Church, 6869 Franklin Rd., Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials may be made to First Tee – Greater Detroit
