Mr. James Roscoe Baldwin, age 73, of Pittsboro, NC entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 16, 2023, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
James, 73, was born on August 12, 1949, in Pittsboro, North Carolina to the late James F. and Grace Lynn Baldwin.
In his youth he worked on the family farm and while in high school his interest in agriculture grew. He was recommended by school administration for an opportunity that led to his initial job and ultimately his career in the grocery industry. James graduated from Horton High School in 1967. Later, he continued his education while attending Central Carolina Technical Institute and received an Associate degree in Automotive Mechanics.
In 1969, he enlisted in the United States Army where he spent 3 years of active duty spending a major portion deployed on an overseas assignment in Korea. While in Korea, James was assigned as a leader in motor pool operations keeping the military vehicles ready for action. He continued serving his country as he served an additional 22 years in the Army Reserves. During his time in the army reserves, James completed Drill Sergeant training then coached and trained soldiers for service in the army. He retired from the military as a Drill Sergeant. After active military duty, James returned to North Carolina and continued his career in the grocery industry as a Produce Manager with several major companies. James retired from Harris Teeter in 2010 with 30 years of dedicated service. James returned to part-time work at the local ABC store to remain active and to stay engaged with people of the community until his illness.
James was a faithful life-long member of Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church, where he attended on a regular basis and supported church activities. He loved to hear the various praise and worship groups and especially the Mitchell Chapel Male Chorus.
Roscoe's many outdoor interests included hunting, fishing, yard work, fixing things, and most of all he was an accomplished vegetable gardener. He used his gift to bless and feed others as he gave vegetables to family, friends, and many in the community. He loved spending time with his family. During family celebrations and holidays, especially Christmas, he cherished giving thanks, laughing, and dining on good food including some harvested from his own garden.
James' generous heart and kindness were an inspiration to many, especially to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife (Bettie).
James will be forever remembered and loved by his son, Jamie T. Baldwin (Veronica Thomas, Fiancé) of Greenbelt, MD; one sister, Sybil Cassandra Murphy of Greensboro; one brother, Charlie Yogi Baldwin (Elaine "Eliyanah") of Cary; two grandchildren, Jamie T. Baldwin, Jr., and Brayden Baldwin both from Maryland; one aunt, Geneva B. Vincent of Maryland; one nephew, Alan; one niece, Nakeesha; two great nieces, Anastasia and Cassidy; one stepdaughter, Donna Mangum (Tony) of Snow Camp; former spouse, Lynette Price of Lexington.
James is also loved and will be remembered by many cousins, friends, neighbors, church family, classmates, coworkers, and some very special people in his life who cared for and loved him dearly.
