James Willis Baxter, age 91 of Louisville, KY, a steadfast beacon of love, intelligence, and gentleness, went to his heavenly home on July 3, 2025, in Louisville, KY. Born in Reeds Station in Owensboro, KY, on April 21, 1934, he cherished a life filled with devotion towards his family, faith, and country.

James, affectionately known to all as a true gentleman, is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Hunt Baxter. His legacy of love continues through his daughters, Rita Legge (James) and Brenda Schramm (Mike); his adored grandchildren, Amy Cardwell (Mike), Jennifer Morgan (Nathan), and Bethany Fentress (Justin); and his 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of cherished nieces and nephews. His life was preceded by the memories of his first wife, Eloda Hunt Baxter, his parents Presley Roland and Minnie Bell Glass Baxter; his dear siblings Usher Baxter, Edna Bullington, Nell Thompson, and Roy Baxter; and the memory of two grandsons, Joshua Oaks and Jacob Legge.

A proud veteran, James served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee at Cubic Point during the Korean War. His professional journey as a dedicated Pipefitter at Reynolds Metal was marked by relentless work ethic and steadfast integrity. James's Christian faith was not just a belief but a way of life, exemplified by his active membership at New Salem Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. He lived his faith and inspired others to embrace what is just and good.

Amongst his many earthly passions, James loved word games, which he played with a sharp wit. He was an avid reader and his fascination with genealogy led him to chronicle the storied branches of his family tree. James also found solace in nature, often spending tranquil hours fishing, and he expressed his creative soul through woodworking and photography.

James always imparted the wisdom, "Remember who you are in everything you do," deeply aware that one's actions are a reflection of their character. His life was a testament to this creed.
