James Robert Black was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 1, 1934. Jim married Hazel Halbert on October 6, 1956. He entered into rest on July 8, 2023.

Jim is survived by his wife Hazel, son James Robert Black Jr., daughter Sheri Mielke and husband Lo, Grandson Eric Mielke, wife Blair and great granddaughter Elora.  Grandson Karl Mielke.

Jim spent most of his working career in management and sales in Los Angeles; mostly in some aspect of public transportation – from elevators to school buses. Later in his working career, Jim shifted his efforts to focus on Christian Charitable work. He worked with World Opportunities Help the Children, by overseeing their food bank operations, which distributed food to needy individuals, to organizations and churches in the greater Los Angeles area.

Jim has a strong baritone voice and enjoyed all vocal music, but he especially loved Gospel music.  As a young man he led singing at church services and sang as a paid singer in an Episcopal church and sang in Gospel quartets. He especially enjoyed Gospel quartets – Blackwood Brothers, The Cathedrals, Oakridge Boys, etc. and the Gaithers.

Jim will be remembered for his gift of encouragement, sense of humor and service to others. In Denver he volunteered at Project Cure, did home repairs for elderly and helped with building a hospital in Honduras for World Opportunity. He worked with intercity churches in Los Angeles, CA and one made him an honorary Bishop.

He will be greatly missed.
