James Gregory Bowen

James Gregory Bowen, age 67, of Basehor, Kansas. James passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
A visitation and fellowship gathering will be held to celebrate James's life on Thursday, October 2nd, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Bonner Springs, Kansas. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at 7:00 PM. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Born April 13, 1958, in Atchison, Kansas, James spent his formative years in the Atchison area before settling in Bonner Springs. He graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1976. For many years, James worked as a skilled rough-in carpenter, contributing his expertise to the construction of numerous homes in the community.
Beyond his professional life, James dedicated a significant portion of his time to coaching and mentoring young wrestlers in Linwood, Bonner Springs, and Basehor. His profound impact on the lives of these athletes is evidenced by the Basehor Wrestling Hall of Fame award bearing his name – a testament to his legacy of dedication and mentorship.
James possessed a deep love for the outdoors, finding solace and enjoyment in fishing along the Kaw River. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Cathy Bowen, in 2023. He is survived by his son, Buddy J. Bowen, of Bonner Springs; his daughter, Amber Bowen, of Lawrence, Kansas; his brother, Robert Bowen, of Eudora, Kansas; his sister, Debbie Ring, of De Soto, Kansas; and his two cherished grandchildren, Nova and Jay.
James will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his life. His memory will be cherished for years to come.
