James Bowen

James Robert Bowen, 88, of Union, MO, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 22, 2025. He was born on October 27, 1939, in St. Louis, MO, to Lyman and Betty (Borden) Bowen.
Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication and love. Early on he went to work for Universal Match Co. in St. Louis. Also in his youth, he married Adrian, and together they were blessed with four children: Cindy, James, Denise, and Angela. The family made their home in Marthasville, MO, where Jim eventually began his career working for on the assembly line at Chrysler. His work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were unwavering. Sadly, James and Adrian later divorced.
In 1988, Jim's life was graced with a new chapter when he married Irene Harvell. With this union, he warmly welcomed two more children into his life, Joseph and Wendy. Jim and Irene settled in the Union/Villa Ridge area, where they shared many cherished moments and built a life together.
After many years in the automotive industry, Jim transitioned to a position at Wal-Mart, where he remained for the next 23 years until his retirement. Alongside Irene, he also assisted with the management of the Great American Flea Market, a place that held special significance as it was where their love story began.
Jim was a man of resilience, often jokingly said to have had "9 lives" due to his remarkable ability to overcome numerous ailments and illnesses throughout his lifetime. His strength and perseverance were an inspiration to all who knew him.
A man of the outdoors, Jim had a passion for hunting, fishing, and firearms of all kinds. His love for these activities was only surpassed by the joy he found in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Irene; his children: Cindy Lawson of Texas, James A. Bowen of Villa Ridge, MO, Denise Reeves and husband, Steven of Belleville, IL, Angela Coleman of Bonne Terre, MO, Joseph Eckert and wife, Kelly of Florissant, MO, and Wendy Toettcher and husband, Matt of Desoto, MO; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a brother, William Bowen of Osage Beach, MO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyman and Betty Bowen.
Services are not planned at this time and cremation has taken place.
