Melvin Glen Hamilton, 70, affectionately known as Mel by his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at his home in
Bourbon, MO, on Monday February 9, 2026. Born on December 5, 1955, in
Cuba, MO, to William and Mildred (Falkner) Hamilton, Mel's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, hard work, and faith.
Mel spent his childhood in
Cuba, MO, and later moved with his family to
Creve Coeur, MO, where he continued his education and discovered a passion for the outdoors and lawncare. His love for nature would become a recurring theme throughout his life, guiding his career choices and hobbies.
In the early years of his career, Mel became a valued member of the Western Auto family, where he honed his skills as an assistant manager. His dedication and hard work were evident to all who worked with him. It was during this time that Mel's life was forever changed when he married the love of his life, Wanda Newman, on March 13, 1975. Mel often referred to Wanda as
the "Light of his life," a beacon that shone brightly through the years of their union.
The joy of Mel's marriage was the blessing of his two sons, Michael and Zachariah. He embraced fatherhood with open arms, providing a loving and nurturing home for his boys. The family made many cherished memories in Creve Coeur, where Mel served the community through his role with the City of Creve Coeur Street Department. His entrepreneurial spirit led him and his brother, Charles, to start "Hamilton Lawncare," a venture that was a reflection of Mel's commitment to family and his love for the outdoors.
In 1991, Mel and Wanda's dream of a country life became a reality when they purchased a farm in
Bourbon, MO. This land became their sanctuary, where they raised cattle, chickens, goats, and horses. Mel's affection for horses was particularly profound, and he found great joy in horseback riding with Wanda across their property. The couple's love for the quiet country life was evident in every aspect of their homestead.
Mel's career continued as he took on roles at Orscheln's Farm & Home and the Crawford County Road Department, from which he retired in 2016. Retirement allowed Mel more time to pursue his interests, which included hunting, fishing, and various shooting sports. His passion for the outdoors was matched by his talent in saddlemaking, a craft that enabled him to create beautiful leatherworks for his family and friends.
Above all, Mel's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a devoted member of The Country Church, where he cherished the fellowship of his church family. Mel's love for the Lord was the guiding force in his life, and he lived every day with the intention of reflecting that love to those around him.
Mel is survived by his loving wife, Wanda; his sons: Michael Hamilton and wife, Kayt of Tampa Bay, FL and Zachariah Hamilton and wife, Stephanie of Waterloo, IL; 4 grandchildren: Madison Thomure and husband, Caleb of Arnold, MO, McKenzie Mendenhall and husband, Jake of Florissant, MO, Morgan & Brady Hamilton both of Waterloo, IL; a brother, Charles Hamilton and wife, Mary of
Creve Coeur, MO; a sister, Elaine Hamilton of
Bourbon, MO; nieces: Pam Durham of South Carolina, Nancy Durbin of Missouri, Joey Cubulske and Lisa Gray all of Illinois; and numerous other relatives and friends.
