James Harris Brandeberry, affectionately known to friends and family as Jim, left this world on September 23, 2025, after a brave battle with illness. Born in the bustling city of Detroit, MI, Jim brought light and laughter wherever he went, ultimately passing away in the arms of his loving partner David Stephenson & lifelong friend Leslie Steubs in Chicago IL. His absence leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Jims's life was a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. A proud graduate of Edina West High School in Minneapolis, he carried the lessons learned there and kept a wonderful family of friends throughout his life. His creative journey began in his teenage years as a talented singer and actor, captivating audiences and setting the stage for a vibrant career that would span for decades.
In his early twenties, Jim's charisma and talent led him to the high seas as an entertainer on Norwegian Cruise Lines. His love for the stage continued to shine as he took several acting jobs around the country, gracing both television and theater with his presence. Jim's dedication to his craft saw him rise to become a Broadway show manager, where he was instrumental in the success of numerous plays, including "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Show Boat," "Candide," " Ragtime," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Scrooge," "Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life," "Festen," "Whistle Down the Wind," "Guys and Dolls," "Memphis," "First Date and several more .
After retiring from Broadway, Jim pursued his passion for cars, taking a position in luxury auto sales, where his encyclopedic knowledge of automobiles was well appreciated. He ended his working days as a leasing agent for a luxury 55 and over apartment building in Evanston, Illinois, where his warm personality and charm made him a beloved figure.
Jim's interests were as varied as his talents. An aficionado of both fine dining and casual dining, he had a great interest in real estate and interior design. He also loved kayaking and boating with his partner David Stephenson, embracing any activity that promoted physical fitness. At home, he was a gifted singer with a home studio and played piano with a passion that matched his voice.
Above all Jim cherished his beautiful relationship with David, who was not only his partner but his best friend. They enjoyed many years together and felt great joy in the fact that they had found each other, Jim had said many times, "I finally know what a relationship should be. "
Jim also cherished the wonderful family he had made over the years including Leslie, Ron, Michael, Courtney, Mac, Parker, Paige, John, Julie, Tyler, Jenn & Eric Steubs, Kelley & Carl Settergren, Alan Childs, Bill Lhotka, Dean Warrel, Bill & Jackie Ranta.
Known for his humor, creativity, and courage, Jim lived a life that reflected his values. As Mark Twain once said, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." Jim found his "why" in bringing joy through his performances, in in the love he shared with his partner and friends, and in the beauty he found in the world around him.
Jim's legacy is one of laughter, artistry, and unwavering bravery in the face of life's challenges. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to be a guiding light for all who had the pleasure of knowing this remarkable man.
