Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas Cremation & Funeral Service - Sayre on Aug. 29, 2025.
It is with profound sadness that the family of James Briggs Sr. announces his peaceful passing at
his home on August 28 th , 2025 at the age of 75, with loving family by his side. Jim was born on
January 2, 1950, in Elmira NY. James was the devoted son of the late Howard and Ruth Briggs.
A lifelong resident of Sayre PA, James graduated from Sayre High School in 1970 and while in high
school James played football. James met his wife Patricia Hale in high school and they married
soon after graduating. James worked at Stroehmann's bakery for 36 years and then at Stateline
Auto for many more years.
James is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia Briggs; daughter Kesha (Jon) Belles,
daughter Heather (Joshua) Briggs and son James (Nicole) Briggs Jr; grandchildren Cassandra
(Adam Robets) Martz, Kendall Martz, Connor (Alex) Chapman, Paige (Ryan Russell), Sean (Alison
Satow), Douglas (Yeniffer) Myers, Aiden, Austin and Adeline Briggs. James is also survived by
many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. James is survived by brothers-in-laws Thomas
and James Hale, Sister-in laws Cheryl Hale and Kelly Gable.
James is preceded in death by his
parents, his grandson Thomas Pennsion, nephew Alexander Gable, sister Deborah Boughton,
brother Robert Joran, brother-in-law Joseph Hale Jr and niece Sherry Boughton.
After retiring, Jim found joy in giving back to the people and community he loved most. He
poured his heart into coaching football and softball, first with his own children and later with
his grandchildren. What started on the sidelines with his kids grew into decades of service,
including running the Small Fry Football League for more than 20 years. His leadership, patience
and encouragement touched the lives of countless young athletes.
When Jim wasn't coaching, Jim could be found on the field or court as a referee and umpire,
always fair and respected. Jim was honored to be the recipient of the Joe Powell Award. Beyond
sports, he lived his life in service, dedicated to the Salvation Army for many years and faithful to
his church community.
Where Jim shined brightest was with his family. He loved nothing more than the time spent
together at family gatherings, sharing stories, laughter and meals around the table. Holidays,
birthdays, cookouts, vacations, playing poker and just being together, those moments were the
ones he treasured the most.
Jim's legacy is not measured by jobs or titles but by the unconditional love he gave his family.
The example he set for his children and grandchildren and the many lives he influenced through
sports, faith and service cannot be measured. He leaves behind not only memories but
traditions and values that will carry on proudly for generations.
Visitation hours will be on Monday September 1 st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Epiphany
Church hall in Sayre with a Catholic Mass being held on September 2 nd at 9:30 a.m. with burial
