Jim passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at J.F.K. Medical Center. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife, Irene (nee Tarloski) Britton. They shared 56 years together and many wonderful memories with family and friends. He was born in Newark and lived in Perth Amboy for 60 years before moving to Edison two years ago.

Jim's parents, Josephine (nee Bender) and James Britton as well as his sisters Lois Aron (Jack) and Lorraine Jakubczak (Art) will meet Jim at Heaven's gate. He is survived by his sister, Joanne O'Brien (Jack), his two brothers, Joseph Britton (Rozalia) and Bruce Britton (Annette). Also survived by his two sons James Malmstrom (Emy) and Jeffrey Britton (Julie), his five grandchildren, especially his pride and joy granddaughters Nicole & Taylor and many nieces and nephews.

Jim served four years in the United States Navy, two years abroad the aircraft carrier Antietam CVS-436 from 1952-1954 during the Suez Crisis.

He joined the Perth Amboy Police Department in 1970 and worked for 25 years in the patrol, traffic, and detective bureau before retiring in 1995.

Jim was a past commander of the Robert Wilentz Post #45 American Legion, a life member of the P.B.A. Local #13 and the retired Police & Firemen's local #9, all of Perth Amboy and life member of the D.B. Kelly Div. #1 Ancient Order of Hibernians in South Amboy.

Jim will be sadly missed by all his extended family and dear friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Flynn and Son /Mitruska Funeral home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Keasbey. Visitation will be on Monday from 3:00-7:00 pm.

Donations in James' memory may be made to Wounded Warrior or Tunnel to Towers Foundation
