St. George Utah - James Wesley Brooks Jr. passed away in his home in
St. George, Utah, on September 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.
He has been known to friends as Jimbo, Butch, Animal, Mr. Potatohead and Jimmy. Jim's employment started at a young age. He worked as a Butcher for his dad at the Brooks Market in Chula Vista, California, until he graduated from high school. He then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he worked as a Forest Ranger and service station attendant on the Las Vegas strip. In 1966, he had an opportunity to pursue the profession of a Union 416 Ironworker with Atlas Steel, then Taylor Steel which later became Century Steel, Inc.
In the 35 years working for Century Steel, he helped transform the Las Vegas Strip into what it is today. He was also one of the main components in the developing of, and teaching in, the Ironworker's Apprenticeship program in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, he could, until the day he died, talk in detail about every job he worked on and was extremely proud of his work. He ultimately retired as a Union Ironworker and opened a Handyman business servicing 87+ customers monthly for 7 years.
He loved serving others including his wife, children, grandchildren, church family, neighbors and friends. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and had numerous hobbies, including fishing, hunting, four-wheel riding, golfing and baseball. He also became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1963, where he served in many capacities, such as, Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Master, Regional Boy Scout Master, Elders Quorum Leader, Sunday School President, High Councilman for 17 years and worked and attended the Las Vegas Temple.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan L. Brooks. He also leaves behind three daughters: CJ Mumford (Micheal), Sheri Harper (Ron), and Mikki Hartman (Danny); two sons: James W Brooks (Dionna) and Brandi Brooks (Malissa); fourteen grandchildren: TC Mumford (Amie), Michael J. Mumford (Brooke), Brittany Peterson (Jordan), Bryan Harper (Natalie), Bryce Harper (Kayla), Chadd Hartman, Cade Hartman (Anessa), Reece Hartman, James W Brooks Jr., Austin Brooks (Annie), Damien Brooks, Marcella Brooks, Jade Brooks and Lilly Brooks; and thirteen great-grandbabies with one on the way: Sierra Mumford, Aubree Mumford, Garrett Mumford, Harley Mumford, Michael J. Mumford Jr., Colton Peterson, Harper Peterson, Hadley (Lulu) Peterson, Cooper Peterson, Krew Harper, Brooklyn Harper and Kamryn Harper.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. (MST) at the Red Cliffs Stake Center, 1285 North Bluff Street,
St. George, Utah 84770. A visitation will be held Monday, prior to services, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Interment will follow the services in the Washington City Cemetery, 300 Park View Drive, Washington UT 84780.
For those who would like to express their condolences to the family, we will be having a small luncheon at the Red Cliffs Stake Center following the interment.
