James Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Spring Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery - Nashville on Mar. 18, 2026.
J. Aaron Brown lived a life defined by creativity, joy, and a deep love for family and friends. Aaron passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, with his beloved wife by his side. He was 85 years old.

Aaron was born in 1940 in White House, Tennessee, the youngest of six children born to Myrtle and Robert Brown. Growing up surrounded by siblings Bethel, Ethel, Ruth, Carl and Bobby, Aaron developed the humor, warmth, and resilience that would define him throughout his life.

He graduated proudly from Isaac Litton High School in 1958, maintaining close friendships with many of his classmates throughout the decades.

Aaron's career in music began on the set of Hee Haw then working with the Oak Ridge Boys, launching a journey that would leave a lasting impact on the music industry. He later helped open the first division of Word Gospel Records in Nashville, where he played an important role in developing gospel and inspirational music. Aaron eventually founded his own publishing company, J. Aaron Brown & Associates, through which he produced and released "A Child's Gift of Lullabyes" and numerous other recordings. His work was recognized nationally when he earned two Grammy Awards for Best Recording for Children, a testament to both his creativity and his dedication to bringing meaningful music to families.

While Aaron's professional accomplishments were significant, those who knew him best will remember his passion for life and the joy he brought to those around him. One of his greatest loves was water skiing, a sport he shared enthusiastically with family and friends for decades. His passion earned him induction into the Water Ski Hall of Fame in 2009, and over the years he taught countless people to ski on Old Hickory Lake and Center Hill Lake, often turning a simple day on the water into a lifelong memory.

Aaron also created a beloved family tradition by playing Santa Claus for more than 32 years, delighting children and adults alike with his warmth, humor, and genuine spirit of giving.

Aaron was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and Robert Brown; his siblings Bethel, Carl, Ethel, and Ruth; and his beloved granddaughter, Taylor Brown.

He leaves behind a family who adored him: his loving wife Connie McAdams; his sons Jay Brown and Matthew Brown (Carolyn); his brother Bobby Brown; and his grandson Hamilton Brown. He is also survived by a large extended Brown family and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Aaron's legacy lives on through the music he created the memories he made on the water, the traditions he built with his family, and the joy he brought into the lives of others.
