After the war James returned to the states and obtained his law degree at the University of Georgia, where he also met his future wife. At UGA he expressed his love of guitar by playing in the UGA Dance Band and continued playing guitar his entire life. After graduation James worked as an agent for the FBI and later transferred to Atlanta where he worked in the law department of The Coca Cola Company. James was an enthusiastic scratch golfer for 60 years until the age of 90. James also accomplished his boyhood dream of becoming a private pilot in his late thirties. He loved flying and made many friends in the aviation field.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Betty Mahone Buckner. He is survived by his three children, Laura Buckner, James Buckner Jr. (Lucy), and Patty Moore (David), six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
The family will be honoring his life with a private memorial service.
