James Udell Butler, age 92, of Mounds, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025 peacefully at home. He was born on September 1, 1932, in Yonkers, Oklahoma, to Phillip and Essie Butler, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Betty Fae (Reschke) Butler on February 16, 1952, in Hutchinson, Kansas.
He is survived by his four children, Della Banks of Kellyville, Oklahoma, Terry Butler (Heather) of Mounds, Oklahoma, Lynn Butler of Mounds, Oklahoma, and Sherry McDaniel (Gary) of Mounds, Oklahoma. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Brian Banks, Kevin Banks, Kelli Jones, Jessica Butler, Terry “TJ” Butler, Amber Butler, Shannon Butler, Shawn Butler, Shannon McDaniel, and Heather Mears, along with 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Butler, his four older sisters, Evelyn Brown, Wanda Moore, Roberta Sanborn, and Margie Graham, his grandsons, James and Chad Butler, and two great grandchildren, Ivy Coursey and Dylan Banks.
In his professional life, Udell was a dedicated owner and operator of Butler & Sons Backhoe Services for many years. His heart was happiest when he was riding his horses along the trails of the Kiamichi Mountains, often accompanied by friends who shared in his passion for the outdoors. The summer months brought joy as he engaged in farming activities, including working with tractors and baling hay.
Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta, OK. Services celebrating Udell’s life will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, Oklahoma. He will be laid to rest at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, Oklahoma.
