James Callis Obituary

James Edward Callis passed away on March 26, 2025.

Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, on Sept.12, 1934, to Thomas Callis and Mary Chloe Summerfield Callis.

He is survived by daughters Leanna Wilson and husband Michael of Sterling, Virginia, grandson Alex and great grandchildren Avery and Aston; Traci Wheeler and husband Dwayne of Southlake, Texas; and Marcia Chloe Boyer and husband Tom and grandson Rocco Boyer of Omaha, Nebraska; and companion Sally Moore of Mountain Home.

James was preceded in death by his son, James Ray Callis; and wife of 61 years, Leanna Rae Callis.

His mother instilled in him his deep faith in Jesus Christ, and he is now reunited with his son and wife in heaven.

James "Jim" Callis attended Green Briar Military Academy and earned degrees from Michigan State University and Midwestern Bible College. Jim was quite the character and was known for many things. He was a talented golfer, played basketball with maximum athleticism, he was an artist, comedian, videographer, and voracious reader. He never met a stranger. And he loved the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11 at First United Methodist Church of Mountain Home, as well as a casual gathering of friends and family at Live Edge Bar & Grill beginning at 6 p.m. later that evening.

Jim was a great man! In high school I hosted Chanel 31 Youth News and then later on about 1991 we did a spoof on Tracy Bird in the Radio Studios and July 4th 1999 he filmed my wedding! It was always great seeing him around town sharing a joke or two and the if only we had done this or that and made it big!

I had known Jim for many years and he always stopped to say hi and talk no matter when or where. He was a nice guy to me always.

Condolences to his family. I knew him and his wife Leanna through community events and her columns in the Baxter Bulletin. I last visited with him and his friend briefly at the Mountain Home Seasonal Concert in 2024 at The Sheid auditorium. He was upbeat and full of good spirit as usual and a very interesting gentleman. I will miss his kind gentlemanly manner and the interesting snippets of his history that he shared with me in several casual conversations. He will be missed.
