James Marshall Canada Jr., affectionately known to many as "Jim," and lovingly called "Junior" by the elders, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and man of unwavering faith. He was born on May 9, 1936, in
Freeport, Illinois, to the late James Marshall Canada Sr. and Cordelia Johnson Canada Carter. The youngest of his family, Jim, was deeply cherished throughout his life.
Jim was a proud graduate of Freeport High School, Class of 1954. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, where his athletic talents flourished. A gifted and versatile athlete, he played basketball and baseball, demonstrating discipline, teamwork, and excellence both on and off the field-qualities that defined his character throughout his life.
A lifelong member of St. James Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in
Freeport, Illinois, Jim faithfully lived out his commitment to God through service. Over the years, he served in many capacities, including as a member of the Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, and Men's Fellowship Choir; a Sunday School teacher; a church van driver; and a devoted member of the Trustee Board. He also faithfully participated in Wednesday Bible Study sessions & Tuesday Morning Prayer line every week. His dedication to his church family was steadfast and set a powerful example for all who knew him.
Widely known as a master cook, Jim later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he pursued entrepreneurship through his passion for barbecue. His food brought people together, just as his personality did-always warm, welcoming, and filled with laughter. Eventually, he returned home to
Freeport, Illinois, where he worked in various roles, culminating in his retirement as a driver for Highland Community College. Even in retirement, Jim remained committed to uplifting others, serving as a coach for church league basketball and mentoring young people through both sports and faith.
Jim was well known for his stories that made you laugh, but also made you think and reflect on the important decisions in life. He was an active advocate for justice and equality, participating in the Equal Rights Movement through a national march and several local protests. He also faithfully served his community for many years as an Election Judge & also prepared taxes for those in need.
On December 23, 1983, Jim married the love of his life, Marlee Hollins Canada. Their 42-year marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love, mutual respect, faith, and perseverance. Together, they built a life rooted in commitment, family, and shared values. Through life's joys and challenges, Jim and Marlee remained devoted partners, supporting one another and walking hand in hand through every season. Their union reflected strength, loyalty, and a love that left a lasting imprint on all who witnessed it.
Jim leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Marlee Canada of Illinois; his children, 2 sons and 2 daughters: Debbie (Dwight) Carrington of Texas; Brian (Rita) Canada of Illinois; Odessa (Jon) Walker of Illinois, and Wesley (Tammy) Canada of Florida. He also leaves a cherished legacy through a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
James Marshall Canada Jr.'s life was one of faith, service, love, and quiet strength.
