James Thomas Capps, Sr., 85, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at North Mississippi Medical Center-Gilmore in Amory.  He was born in Nettleton on June 11, 1938 to Hazel Walden and Ida Mae Humbers Capps.  He attended Smithville and Amory schools and proudly served in the Mississippi Army National Guard.  On April 12, 1958, he married the former Earline Phillips.  He worked at Kramco and later for Atlas Body Shop from which he retired.  He later went back to work for Bentonite Mine Global and his hobbies included fishing, puzzles, and word search.  He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his nieces and nephews.  He liked watching westerns on television and the Discovery Channel series.  Even though being bed ridden, he looked forward to having company and visiting with his family and friends.  James like gospel music and attending ICC football games.  In years past, operated the clock and manned the down markers for Hatley Tiger Football.  He was a longtime member of Smithville Church of Christ.

 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Ministers Mickey Beam, Bobby Cleveland, Chris Long, Justin Haynes officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hatley Cemetery with Bro. Chuck Moffett.

 

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Earline Capps of Hatley, he is survived by his son, James T. “Killer” Capps, Jr. of Hatley;  brother, Rodney Capps of Smithville; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Hazel Phillips of Gattman; sister, Brenda Salinas of TX; sister-in-law, Debbie Capps of Ocean Springs and Norma Fay Capps; a host of nieces and nephews; special niece, Brandi Flippo (Jason) of Smithville; and nephew and helper, Sam Jones (Liz) of Hatley.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Wanda Fay Capps; sister, Shirley Tucker; brothers, Charlie, H.W., Jerry, and Wayne Capps; mother and father-in-law, Maudie Mae and William Needle Phillips; and brothers-in-law, Ollie Tucker, Leon Phillips, and Harold Phillips.

 

Pallbearers will be Sam Jones, Brandon Mohler, Charles Davis, Raymond Tucker, Rodney Brewer, Waylon Powell, Jay Credille, and Jason Flippo.  Honorary pallbearers will be Dustin Hawkins, Dakota Prestage, and Austin Fretwell; and the staff of Gentiva Hospice.

 

Visitation will be on Saturday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
