James “Champ” Eldridge Davis, 88, of Elizabethtown passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Davis and Carrie Hall Davis, six siblings and his son Phillip Davis. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Marie Davis of the home, daughters Lisa Long (Larry) of Clayton, Carrie Brisson (Burt) of Elizabethtown, daughter-in-law Margie Davis of St. Pauls, NC, four grandchildren Tanner Long, Sydney Davis, Thad Brisson, and Ava Marie Brisson and one great grandson, Grayson Bellflowers.
James was affectionately known as Champ to his family, friends, and the community. He earned that nickname while in high school during his boxing days. He was always ready for anything. He loved to spend time with his family, riding around with his wife, Marie, fishing, feeding wildlife, and tinkering in his shop. Champ was a man of many talents, a lineman with Carolina Telephone, later Sprint Telephone Service, employee at Carter Blueberry Farms, grape grower, and owner of Champs Grill in Elizabethtown. He enjoyed being around people, joking and talking with anyone he met. One of his favorite spots was at Melton’s Restaurant first thing for his cup of coffee and morning catch up with the neighbors. Champ was a joy to have around, and he loved living life to the fullest. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend that left his mark of determination, compassion, and joy to every life he touched.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 -11:00 am on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am with the Reverend Ralph Carter officiating. A burial will follow the service in the Allen Cemetery on Bethel Church Rd in Dublin.
