It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Herman Codd (Jim), beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, in-law and friend to many. Jim passed away at his Lutherville home on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the age of 78.
Jim grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He was one of four boys to Emmett and Dorothy Codd. As a young boy Jim played soccer, basketball, and baseball and he always found a way to make some money. He loved to coach baseball in his early days. Jim graduated from Calvert Hall College in 1964. He graduated with a business degree from University of Baltimore College in 1972 and served in the United States Army Reserve. Jim had two children, Carey and Valerie, from a previous marriage, along with four grandchildren, Wyatt, Greyson, Jackson and Harrison. He married his wife, Doe, in 1995. They enjoyed a beautiful life of 29 years, welcoming Doe's daughter, Michelle, and 2 grandchildren, Samuel and Kaylee. Jim worked as a Budget Analyst for more than 34 years for Social Security Administration. He also refereed women's high school and college lacrosse, along with soccer. After his retirement in 2003, he continued to referee. He also was a substitute teacher in Baltimore County Schools for eight years and volunteered at both the Franciscan Center and ACTC. In his early years, Jim found acting very fulfilling and cathartic. He performed in many musicals and plays in church halls and at Spotlighters on St. Paul Street in Baltimore. He was in shows such as Man for All Seasons, Music Man, Hello Dolly, and The Odd Couple. He loved trivia night with his team and travelling extensively with his wife, Doe, throughout the United States and Europe.
Jim was Catholic and had a beautiful relationship with Our Dear Lord. He loved his family, along with being an avid Orioles, Ravens and Maryland Terps fan. He loved teaching his grandchildren and spending quality time with them, picking them up from school, going to their events when possible and endearing conversations and guidance for his older grandchildren. He had a special charm about him! He was quick with a joke, inventive with verbal humor, a keen observer, giving words of wisdom, and had a wonderful sense of humor enjoyed by all. Jim was also an avid reader and had a zest to learn. He always had a twinkle in his eye across the room for Doe when they were out.
Jim's love of family, his love for Our Dear Lord, his integrity, his commitment to treating others with kindness, and persistence to learn and acquire knowledge to share with others will stand as a lasting legacy and example to all who knew and loved him.
