James D. Collins, 75, a lifelong resident of Vermont, passed away on October 18, 2025 at UVM Medical Center in Burlington, surrounded by his loving children.
Born on May 7, 1950 in Barre, Vermont, Jim was the son of Harry Collins and Katherine "Kitty" (Freeman) Collins. Jim grew up in Barre Town and most recently resided in East Barre. A 1968 graduate of Spaulding High School, Jim went on to obtain his Associate's Degree from the Hartford College of Accounting in 1970. He served in the United States Army National Guard in Berlin, VT from 1970 to 1976. Jim enjoyed a long and distinguished career at National Life from 1971 until his retirement in 2001. Never one to stay idle, he continued to work with the Gosh family of Brookfield and at Champlain Farms in Waterbury, where he formed lasting friendships.
Jim was a sports enthusiast who excelled in high school and Legion baseball, earning him the nickname "Mudcat." His love of the game never faded and he went on to play softball with friends for many years. Jim treasured his time spent by the water especially at Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Champlain, Lake George, and Hampton Beach. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and watching his grandchildren compete in different sporting events. Jim was known for his warm heart, welcoming spirit, and the kindness and respect he showed to everyone he met. He was a thoughtful listener, easy to talk to, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Above all, Jim deeply loved his family and took great pride in each of them.
Jim is survived by his children, Erin (Collins) Murphy and her husband, Brandon, of Colchester, VT, and Tim Collins and his partner, Elsbeth McSorley, of Wolfeboro, NH; his grandchildren, Gavin Murphy and Reese Murphy; his brother and best friend, Jack Collins, and wife, Alyce, of East Montpelier, VT; his former wife and friend, Cindy (Roy) Collins; his nephew, Matt Collins; and many other family, friends and community members who cherished him. He was predeceased by his longtime partner, Loris Rollins; his parents; his sister, Stephanie Collins; and his niece, Tracy (Collins) Taylor.
Jim's family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of UVMMC's cardiology team. Per Jim's wishes, there will be no visiting hours or formal memorial service. A celebration of life will be planned for Spring 2026.
