James Collins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home on Mar. 12, 2026.
James Patrick Collins, 86, of South Windsor, beloved husband of the late Pamela Ann (Coleman) Collins, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on March 9, 2026.

He was born on October 30, 1939, at Brookfield House in Abbey, Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland, son of William and Mary Teresa (Murray) Collins.

James was a 1957 graduate of St. Bridget's School in Portumna, County Galway, Ireland and continued his education, earning an associate's degree in 1962 from Willesden Technical College in London, England. While living in London, he met the love of his life, Pamela Coleman, at a dance at The Galtymore. The two married and later immigrated to the United States in 1965, where they built a life together centered around family, perseverance, and resilience.

James worked as a pipefitter and welder and was a proud member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Steamfitters Local 777 of Connecticut. His trade required skill, discipline, and dedication, and he traveled frequently for work throughout his career. He took pride in the work he did and in providing for his family.

James remained deeply connected to his Irish roots throughout his life. Ireland was always "home" to him, and he returned often to visit family and friends. An early riser, he could often be found in the kitchen on weekend mornings with Irish music playing loudly throughout the house. He also enjoyed watching Irish sports, especially hurling.

James had a passionate interest in politics and was never afraid to share his opinions. He was known for his remarkable memory and sharp wit, often surprising family members by recalling answers while watching Jeopardy.

Above all, James loved his family deeply. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and treasured the time spent with them.

He is survived by his three children, Carolyn Collins and her husband John Belsen of South Windsor, Gary Collins of Groton, and James Collins and his wife Alison of Newington; his four beloved grandchildren, Sean Holmes and Kevin Holmes of South Windsor, and Aidan Collins and Madison Collins of Newington; and his brothers, Michael Collins of Hawley, Pennsylvania, and Liam Collins and his wife Beatrice of Galway, Ireland, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 62 years, Pamela Ann Collins; his sister June and her husband Pat Cahalin of London, England; and his sister-in-law Maura Collins of Hawley, Pennsylvania.

James will be laid to rest beside Pamela, reunited with the love of his life.

"So I'll spend my days in endless roving, soft is the grass, my bed is free."

- from the Irish ballad Carrickfergus

At the request of his family, funeral services will be held privately. Burial will take place in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor.
