“I’m Fine.”
James Robert Combs, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home in the Jonathon Creek Community on November 10, 2025, following an extended illness. Born on July 21, 1947, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late Mary Helen Franz Combs, Jim lived a life marked by joy, kindness, and an unwavering zest for living.
Jim was a beacon of warmth and laughter. His open-hearted nature and fun-loving spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a gift for making others feel seen, heard, and loved—transforming ordinary moments into cherished memories.
He now joins his beloved sister, Carolyn Hicks, and his mother in eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love and a lifetime of stories that will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
Jim spent much of his career as an electrician and insurance adjuster, skills he developed through a dedicated apprenticeship after high school. But his true passion lay in the outdoors. He found joy in elk hunting—not for the trophy, but for the experience of riding through nature and spotting elk in their habitat. A “good hunt” meant seeing just one in a field, and that was enough. He loved to ride and explore, finding beauty in the everyday and meaning in the journey.
Above all, Jim was a family man. His proudest accomplishment was the deep bond he shared with his loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Donna Marie Parke Combs; his children, Angela Michelle Rees and James Matthew Combs (JoAnna); his grandchildren, William Keifer Rees (Lexi), Anthony Kyle Rees, and Abigail Nicole Combs; and his great-grandson, Levi. Together, they built a legacy of laughter, love, and resilience.
Jim’s infectious smile could brighten the darkest day. He had a way of making people laugh, turning gatherings into celebrations. He was well-liked, deeply loved, and effortlessly connected with others—building friendships that stood the test of time.
He lived by a simple but powerful philosophy: “I’m Fine.” It was more than a phrase—it was his way of reassuring those around him that everything would be okay. In those two words, he taught us that happiness is a choice, and that peace comes from within. Jim never dwelled on the gray areas of life; he chose light, optimism, and joy.
Though Jim will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to shine through the stories, smiles, and love he leaves behind. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville, North Carolina. All are welcome to gather and honor the beautiful soul of Jim Combs.
