James Cooper Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Options Funeral and Cremation Services, LLC - Naples on Jan. 15, 2026.
James Leslie Cooper, 76 of Naples, Florida, passed away on December 21, 2025.

Born in New Britain, Connecticut, on May 13, 1949, to John and Shirley (Perkins) Cooper, Jim was the eldest of four children and is survived by his siblings, Ellen Page, Dotty Peck, and Tommy Cooper. After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts, Jim began a distinguished 45-year career with the McDonald's Corporation. His dedication led him to become a respected Owner/Operator of three locations in Rhode Island, where he poured his life's work into his business and his community. Beyond the golden arches, Jim was an advocate for others, serving as an active supporter of the Ronald McDonald House of Providence and the Special Olympics.

Jim found joy on the tennis court, scuba diving, and traveling the world - adventures he cherished most when shared with his loving wife, Dawn. Whether they were exploring new destinations or enjoying a fine wine and a perfect espresso martini, Jim embraced every moment with a great sense of humor. As a leader, he led by the example of his tireless work ethic and took pride in providing opportunities for the employees he so deeply valued. Though his competitive nature meant he never let anyone win without a fight, he approached life's challenges with a calm, thoughtful, and measured hand. Jim was a dedicated provider who gave his children both the roots to remain grounded and the wings to find their own success.

Jim is survived by his wife, best friend, and love of his life, Dawn Cooper of Naples, Florida, his daughter Erin Johnson, her husband Ryan Johnson, granddaughter Logan Johnson, and grandson Tristan Johnson of Andover, MA, son Ryan Cooper, his wife Erin Cooper, and granddaughters Ryleigh and Abby Cooper of Wakefield, MA.

A memorial and celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 28 from 1-5pm at Linden Place, 500 Hope St., Bristol, RI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Jim's memory to Ronald McDonald House Charities New England at https://rmhcne.org/.

Jim raised in New Britain, CT, a Pulaski General, UCONN grad and a very close friend growing up on Ruth Rd. We enjoyed camping out in my parents yard, raiding the neighbors gardens, playing baseball and football against our neighborhood rivals and enjoying basketball shoot-outs on his home court in his backyard. Thought he was crazy going to work at McDonald's but little did I know that he had a Vision. Lots of great memories. May you Rest In Peace! Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
