James E. Cothren
The richest man in town left today.
Our dad saw himself that way not because he had money. He wasn't wealthy. What he had was a profound love for people, extending hospitality and utilizing his gifts to serve others faithfully as a recipient and steward of God's grace. He lived a humble life and he exemplified Christ's love through many acts of kindness.
Eloise and James were married for over 71 years and lived in the Atlanta / Queen City area since 1965. His life's work included family farming, Grogan Supply Co., the US Army, Perry Brothers, Texar FCU, KPYN, Benita's Floral, and lastly he delivered cars for a local auto dealer.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Nancy Cothren, infant brother, Walter Wayne, and brother Charles Wesley, wife Eloise, his grandson, Vernice "Bubba" Kirkland and his great-granddaughter, Ehlana Danae Jackson. James is survived by three sons, David (Jean) Cothren, Sammy (Ember) Cothren, Paul (Loretta) Cothren. His sister, Doris Marie Knight; His grandchildren, Christy Cothren Myers and husband Jason, Joanne Cothren Gibson and husband Jonathan, Cindy Jackson, Jacki Hammontree, Daniel Cothren, Jaime Kirkland; his great-grandchildren, Haleigh Byrd,, Conley Hammontree, Reid Hammontree, Nate and Annelise Gibson, Ryan and Andrew Myers, MacKenzie and Charleigh Cothren, Blake and Erica Cruson; great-great-grandchildren, Keaton, Kreed and Channing Cruson; two dear friends, Virginia Steger and Charles "Cooter" Wall.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at West Side Baptist Church, under the direction of Hanner Funeral service, with Bro. Jim Howard officiating.
Visitation will be Monday, April 22, 2024, from 6 pm to 8 pm at West Side Baptist Church.
Interment will be in Courtland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Rebecca's Pantry, 712 West Main Street, Atlanta, Texas 75551.
