James Joseph Crociata, age 51, passed away on January 23, 2023, after a two-year battle with cancer surrounded by his loved ones at the family home.
James was born June 29, 1971, in Norwich, Connecticut. As the son of a career naval officer, James grew up around military installations around the country. From childhood, James demonstrated an early talent for art that would continue throughout his lifetime.
James attended the University of Hawaii where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in History. After graduating, James joined the Air Force and served as a Medical Technician in the Middle East and Asia. After completing his military service, James enrolled at the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Art and a Master's Degree in Education. After graduation, he began his career as an elementary art teacher in the Knox County school system where he taught for over a decade. As a teacher, James enjoyed sharing his love of art with his students and opening their eyes to the often-overlooked beauty that surrounds us.
After a successful teaching career, James went to work at the University of Tennessee Medical Center as a clinical supply specialist. There, James earned the reputation of a great person to work with who routinely went above and beyond to help the staff. A talented craftsman, his skills were evident in all his artistic creations and the legacy he left behind. James will be remembered for his grace, character, and kindness which will be dearly missed by family and friends.
James is survived by his parents, Joseph and Jill Crociata, brother, Joseph Crociata, and sister, Robin Crociata.
His family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the University of Tennessee Medical Cancer Center and the UTMC Hospice Services nurses who provided extraordinary care for James in his time of need. James was in our little cohort of art teachers. I'm shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. He was so kind and funny and a truly great teacher. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am so sad to hear that James has passed. I studied Art Education with him at UT. I will remember him as one of the funniest people I ever knew.
