James Robert Darnell, Sr., widely known as Jim, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. Born in Morgantown, WV, on November 14, 1954, Jim's journey through life spanned 69 fulfilling years.
A loyal and loving husband, Jim leaves behind his cherished wife of 47 years, Diana Darnell, of Cheat Lake. His legacy continues through his son, Matthew Jason Darnell and his partner, Shaina Solomon, both of Cheat Lake, WV. Jim was the steadfast cornerstone of a large and loving family that included his brothers Johnnie Darnell with wife Donna of Lake Lynn, PA, and David Darnell with wife Elizabeth of Cheat Lake; and sisters Patricia Hines and husband John of Morgantown, and Delores Baker of Smithfield, PA. His joyous spirit will forever be mirrored in the lives of his granddaughters Kelsie Darnell of Thornton, WV, and Kristen Darnell of Morgantown. Special niece Paisley Grace Ohler of Point Marion, PA, whom he loved dearly as a granddaughter, together with several other nieces and nephews, will hold the memory of Uncle Jim close to their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Eston & Leona Smith Darnell, his son James R. Darnell Jr., and his brother William E. Darnell.
A graduate of University High School, Jim devoted 46 years as a maintenance laborer to West Virginia University, demonstrating an unparalleled work ethic and commitment to the community he served. Beyond his professional life, Jim's passion for the natural world was evident. An avid outdoorsman, he relished every opportunity to be hunting, fishing, and camping. His love for the outdoors and nature was insatiable; he was always happiest on the river or in the forest. Jim was equally renowned for his knack for working on and fixing things; he lived by the principle that with the right tools and a touch of ingenuity, "There's a way to do it better-find it." This quote, attributed to the great inventor Thomas A. Edison, reflects the essence of Jim's resourceful spirit.
Jim was a devoted attendee of Harvest Family Worship Center in Morgantown. His life was a testament to the virtues of devotion, love, and perseverance that he practiced and preached.
Jim Darnell's warm smile, hearty laughter, and the wisdom of his stories profoundly touched all those fortunate enough to know him. While he will be deeply missed, the memories he created with family and friends provide solace and inspiration for all the days to come.
Friends and family will gather at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and again on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 11 AM until time of service at 12 PM with Pastor Kevin Summers officiating. He will rest near his home at the Fletcher Cemetery.
