James William DeLisle, Sr., (Jim) 78, of Murrells Inlet, SC, and formerly of East Hartford and Wethersfield, CT, life's journey ended early morning with his family by his side at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, on Monday, January 27, 2025. James was born on March 7, 1946 in Hartford, CT son of the late Lee and Marie DeLisle.
With great pride, James was a US Navy MCB 58 Veteran and did two tours in Vietnam. He was the owner of The Tobacco Shop on Asylum Street in Hartford for 50 years where customers became friends. James enjoyed smoking his favorite cigars with friends at Good Fellows and Cigars Under the Stars. He looked forward to the Twin Oaks Saturday Morning Breakfast Club. He was also a founding member of the Navy Seabees Veterans of America South Carolina Island X-3. He was a friend of Bill W. for 32 years.
James is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellyn DeLisle of Murrells Inlet, SC; children, Kimberly Isern (Golbert) of Manchester, CT, James DeLisle, Jr. of Amston, CT and Brian DeLisle (Kristen) of Tolland, CT; grandchildren, Golbert Isern, III, Jovan Isern, Lexi DeLisle and Charliey DeLisle; and great grandchildren, Estevan Isern and Reagan Isern.

I met Jim when I was in my early 20s working downtown.

I walked in on one lunch break and fell in love with The Shop due to its oasis nature; a little spot for respite in the midst of a busy world.

Over the years Jim educated me on the pleasure of cigars and little moments of escape of in life.

I also met and made lifelong friendships and memories that will last even as time passes.

Pete, Bruce, Terry, Paul, Bill, and of course Mary Ellen.

Condolences, Respect and Rest in Peace Jim.

With gratitude, Ron

Jim and I shared a love of cigars and footwear. Jim always wore the most dapper boots.

I can't enumerate the number of conversations that we had over the years. When Jim and Mary Ellen sold The Tobacco Shop, they asked me to keep a promise. I'm glad to say that I did.

He was on my mind last week...

Jim was like a father to me in my formative years, and his wife like the mother I wish I had. Although many years and miles separated us, I still look back fondly with love. May you rest in peace, Jim. To all the DeLisles and Iserns, I share your pain.
Love,
Eric A. Eaton

As sorry and sad as I am to read of Jim's passage, it is great to see how full and rich he was in life. The next time I have a cigar my thoughts will be of the days he sold me tobacco, and offered his smile to all who walked in his doorway.
