James Dorman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home - Forest Grove on Jan. 22, 2026.
James William Dorman Sr. (Jim 1), 91, a resident of the Forest Grove community passed away on January 16, 2026 at Brian Care Home in Hillsboro.

Jim was born in Portland, OR on June 10, 1934. He was the older of two children born to Hugh and Narcisse (Patterson) Dorman. Jim was raised in Forest Grove and graduated from Forest Grove High School with the class of 1952.

Immediately after high school, Jim enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany during the time of the Korean conflict, where he received training in vehicle maintenance. Adding this training to his activities involving hot rods and dirt track racing at the Sunset track in Banks, Jim opened Dorman's Speed Shop on June 1, 1956 and fixed cars for exactly 40 years, retiring on June 1, 1996.

In 1960, Jim joined Holbrook Masonic Lodge in Forest Grove, where he served the community for over 65 years. His passion for Freemasonry was a big part of his life, earning him many honors and the respect of his Masonic brothers.

In 1962, Jim met his future wife, Carmen Hutt, when his mother, a teacher in Forest Grove brought Carmen, a student teacher, to the family's home for dinner. After a two-year courtship, they were united in marriage on June 27, 1964. They made their home together in Forest Grove, where they had their son, Jim II.

Jim enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, hiking and hunting. He was an avid reader, his favorites being history, particularly World War II and logging in the Pacific Northwest. When he chose to read fiction, stories of Sherlock Holmes were among his favorites.

Jim and Carmen retired at the same time and embarked on a long series of trips to various places around the world. Their travels took them to every continent on Earth except Australia. Jim was very proud of telling people he swam in the Antarctic Ocean.

He is preceded in passing by his parents, Hugh and Narcisse, and brother, Charles Dorman.

He is survived by his son Jim and his wife Debbie, niece Ann Kallay, and nephews, Dan Dorman and Todd Dorman.
