James Asberry "Stompa" Dubose, 63, of Calhoun Falls, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on the morning of November 9, 2025, at Self Regional hospital in Greenwood, SC, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 28, 1962, in
Abbeville, SC, to the late Marshall Brown and the late Allie Mae Dubose. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, John Henry Dubose.
James is survived by his two cherished children, James A. Dubose and Chevonnie Brown, who were the pride of his life. he also leaves behind his loving brothers Michael Dubose, Clarence Brown, and Franklin Brown, and his devoted sisters Diane Baskin, Joan Lewis, Gloria Thomas, Brenda Brown, and Teresa Williams. He was blessed with two adored grandchildren, Jevon Brown and Summerrae Brown, who brought him endless joy. In addition, he leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and countless longtime friends whom he loved like brothers and sisters.
James grew up in Calhoun Falls and attended Calhoun Falls schools throughout his childhood. From a young age he developed a passion for basketball, a love that carried through his teenage years and well beyond high school. He was known for his strong work ethic, having started work at age 16 at Burlington mill in Calhoun Falls. He went on to dedicate more than twenty years to textile work at Westpoint Stevens Mill until its closing.
After hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana, James felt called to help. He traveled there and spent nearly a decade working to rebuild homes and communities, leaving a lasting impact on many lives. Once he returned to South Carolina, James was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Even through hardship, he met every day with a smile, resilience, and a determination to keep moving forward. He never allowed illness to dim his spirit.
On November 1, 2025, James sought emergency care after feeling ill and learned he had developed leukemia in addition to other serious conditions. Though his health declined, he continued to fight with dignity, strength, and unwavering faith. he remained willing to help others whenever he could and never complained, even in the face of tremendous challenges.
James "Stompa" Dubose will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his generosity, and his enormous heart. He touched countless lives with his loyalty, his laughter, and his ability to lift others up even while carrying his own burdens. His legacy of love, resilience, and compassion will forever live on in his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
