Obituary published on Legacy.com by Colma Cremation & Funeral Services - Colma on May 2, 2025.
Joseph Ell, 63, passed away on April 23, 2025, in San Francisco, California. Born on September 10, 1961, in Long Beach, New York, James, known to many as Jim, lived a life marked by dedication, creativity, and deep affection for those around him.
Jim served his country with honor as a signalman aboard the USS Elliot DD-967 in the United States Navy. His time in the service reflected his strong sense of duty and commitment to teamwork, qualities that would continue to define his professional and personal life.
Following his military service, Jim built a career in facilities management and hospitality. He worked as a Facilities Manager for THC Clinic and held positions as Resident Manager at both the Mayfair Hotel and most recently at Hotel Union. In each role, he brought reliability, care, and a hands-on approach that earned the respect of colleagues and guests alike.
Outside of work, Jim was a man of many talents and passions. In his youth, he was an avid athlete who especially loved diving and playing softball, often taking up second base with enthusiasm and skill. As he grew older, he loved riding his motorcycle, that he lovingly dubbed Nancy II in tribute to his wife, his creative spirit flourished through woodworking and stained glass artistry. He took great joy in crafting beautiful gifts for family and friends, each piece a reflection of his thoughtfulness and craftsmanship.
Jim's heart was fullest when surrounded by those he loved. He shared a devoted life with his loving wife. Their home was filled with warmth, and also with their beloved pets: Jax the dog, Chloé the cat, Harley the rosy boa, and Hades the ball python. Each companion held a special place in Jim's heart.
He is mourned by many who knew him and cherished his presence. Jim was predeceased by his father Charles Ell; mother Dorothy Elizabeth Ward Gorman; Step father William Bonney; father-in-law Jacques J Barcomb; mother-in-law Pauline Decosse Barcomb; brother Gary Stiner; sisters Charlene, Janine, and Dorothy.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years Nancy Barcomb Ell, his sister-in-law Lorraine Barcomb Harrell Martin; brother-in-law Steven A Martin: and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be planned in both San Francisco, California, and Plattsburgh, New York. Details will be shared with friends and family at a later date.
Jim's memory lives on through the love he gave so freely to others, his wife, his animals, his friends, and through every handcrafted gift that now serves as a lasting reminder of his generous spirit. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
