James Gaillard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kahlert Funeral & Cremations - Maysville on Mar. 26, 2026.
James Donald Gaillard, affectionately known as Don, was a beacon of kindness and spirited faith who departed from this earthly life on March 21, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on September 12, 1934, Don's journey through life was marked by love, service, and a deep-seated belief in Christian values.

Don's legacy is lovingly cherished by his devoted wife, Mary Gaillard, who shared with him a bond of unparalleled strength and affection. Together, they navigated the joys and challenges of life, creating a tapestry of memories filled with laughter, faith, and companionship. Their shared love for travel saw them exploring the breadth of the United States, savoring moments of discovery and the simple pleasure of dining out. At home, Don was a true homebody, finding contentment in the tranquility and comfort of his own space.

His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he leaves behind a lineage of love including his step-son, Brad Harrell of New Bern; step-daughters, Kimberly Ward of Birmingham, AL, Janet Monroe Kruze (Michael) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jamie Harrell (Robert) of Madison, Mississippi. Don's brother, John Gaillard of Winston-Salem, NC, also survives him, as does his grandson, Bobby Smith Jr. of Leland, NC, and numerous step-great-grandchildren, all of whom will hold his memory close to their hearts.

Don was a man of many interests, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. His passion for golf was only matched by his love for a cold Coca-Cola and the excitement of Clemson Football. Don's spirit soared with the Tigers, and he was always seen proudly sporting their vibrant orange colors on game days.

His service to his country was a source of great pride for Don. As an Airman First Class, he served with honor and distinction, stationed in North Africa, where he exhibited the same dedication and commitment that would define his life.

Above all, Don's Christian faith was the guiding light of his existence. He found solace and strength in the community of his church, where he lifted his voice in song as part of the choir. The song "This Blood" held a special place in his heart, its words "what can wash away my sins" resonating deeply with him each time he sang.

Don will forever be remembered as a sweet and kind soul, whose presence was a source of calm and whose spirit was a testament to his unwavering faith. His influence extends beyond the confines of this world, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him to live with kindness, passion, and a heart full of love.

As we bid farewell to James Donald Gaillard, we take solace in the knowledge that his spirit has found eternal peace and that his life has been a reflection of the grace and goodness that he so readily shared with others. He will be dearly missed, yet his legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.

A Celebration of Don's Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday March 31, 2026, at Bethany Christian Church in the Jasper Community, 3475 NC-55, New Bern, NC 28562.
