James M. Gott (also known as Jim or Jimmy) passed away peacefully on June 27, 2022, under the care of Treasure Coast Hospice.
Jim is preceded in death by his father George, his mother Mary (Conran) Gott; sister Mary (Gott) Sheedy; brother George Gott. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Theresa (Terry) Conmy Gott, his sister, Helen (Gott) Lindgren, his brothers-in-law, JohnM. Conmy and Kevin (Janet) Conmy, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Jimmy was born on May 20, 1948. He grew up in the Bronx and New York City where he graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School. Instead of being drafted, he decided to serve with the toughest fighting group and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 to serve his country. Jim was a combat Viet Nam veteran who was awarded 2 Purple Hearts during his tour of duty in Viet Nam.
When you developed a close friendship with Jimmy, you soon realized that it was going to be unique and special. He was the most loyal and supportive friend anyone could want to have. He built great friendships with many people by spending time with them in activities such as diving, photography, and travel or by simply having heart-to-heart conversations with him sharing thoughts or emotions. Jim loved life, music, his friends & family.
Jim worked in and ran businesses in auto-mechanics, construction, HVAC, and the diving industries. He was a skilled photographer, sailor, builder, mechanic, and author. As a young boy, he was intrigued with adventure, including the underwater world & basically taught himself to scuba dive in the East River. After his tour with the 1st Marines, he pursued this passion by attending commercial diving school in California. He then worked in the underwater oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico, Oceaneering International in the Caribbean, and with the Florida Local 1026 Divers Union including the construction of the intake pipeline at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant.
In 1976 he authored "Amphibian: The Adventures of a Professional Diver"; this led to his becoming a part of the oceanographic conservation expedition including being part of the Tall Ships Regatta to NYC. Besides being a commercial diver, he was a certified scuba diving instructor by both NASDS & PADI.
Jim and his wife Terry shared that sense of adventure in their life together. After diving, Jim was a skilled HVAC technician specializing in the marine industry and many will recall his answering their calls for service throughout the Caribbean. They enjoyed their passions for travel, sailing, diving, and nature while they worked and cruised on their sailboat in the Caribbean and Venezuela before returning to Stuart, FL.
