James J. Grates

James J. Grates, age 92 of Filion, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at his home, under hospice care, with his family by his side.
He was born on July 7, 1931 in Harbor Beach, to the late Thomas and Frances (Kociba) Grates. Jim and Dorine Reddicliffe were united in marriage on August 7, 1954 in Harbor Beach. Jim served in the US Air Force from 1951 until his retirement in 1971. Jim spent time in many different countries during his time in the service: Germany, France, Philippines, before retiring state side. Jim enjoyed his garden and working in the yard. He was especially fond of spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife Dorine Grates of Filion, children: Gloria Naser of Midland, Robert Grates of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Rhonda Nivison of Harbor Beach, Edard (Linda) Grates of Stuart, Florida, Michael (Leslie) Grates of Harbor Beach, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, his sister: Sister Mary Ann Grates, IHM, of Monroe, brothers: Earl Grates of Shelby Township, and Raymond Grates of Bad Axe.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Stanley Grates, Viola Klebba, Lillian Schave, Frank, Grates, Clarence Grates, and Art Grates.
Cremation has taken place, and internment will take place at the Great Lakes National Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach. Memories can be shared at www.RamseyFH.com
