James Gray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 12, 2026.
James Thomas Gray passed away at Brightwood Club on 2/7/2026 at the age of 98 as a result of congestive heart failure.

He was one of four children born to Biscoe L. Gray and Margaret N. Gray.

Gray attended Boy's Latin School, graduating in 1946. He played football, basketball, and lacrosse. He served 2 years in the US Army. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1952, where he was an honorable mention All-American lacrosse attackman and an English major. He attended night school at The University of Baltimore School of Law while working during the day, earning the nickname "sack time." Jim worked for a variety of companies in the securities and estate planning areas. He was a Board Member at Boy's Latin School.

Gray married Ann Wellington in 1954, having two children, James Thomas Gray, Jr and Carroll Wellington Gray Keating. He was devoted to his family, his father, his wife, and five grandchildren (Michael, Lawrence, Helen, David, and William). Gray was a congregant at The Church of the Good Shepherd until his move to Brightwood Club, where he continued to attend services.

Jim played squash at The Maryland Club until his 88th year, when he transitioned to exercise classes. He enjoyed mixed doubles tennis and paddle tennis with his wife, Ann.

Jim is best remembered for his enduring relationships across generations and locations. He and Ann hosted a cherished annual multigenerational Christmas Eve gathering for families of godchildren and beloved friends.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, February 28, at 10AM, at the Maryland Club, 1 E. Eager St., Baltimore.
