Jim was born on December 17th, 1953, in
Redfield, SD, to Alvin and Rita (Richmond) Hansen. He attended Turton Elementary School until the 6th grade and then graduated from Doland High School in Doland, SD, in 1972.
On November 25th, 1978, Jim and Judy Brech were united in marriage and made their home together on the farm west of Turton. They raised two children together, Melissa (Josh) Underberg and Craig (Ashlee) Hansen.
A lifelong farmer, Jim found great satisfaction working the land and caring for his family's farm. His hard work, perseverance, and deep respect for the land reflected his strong character and love for rural life. He was lucky to farm with his dad and was even more grateful when his kids moved back to help him.
Jim truly enjoyed his daily coffee gatherings. He never missed a chance to sit down for a good cup of coffee and even better company – those moments meant the world to him.
Beyond the farm, Jim was passionate about giving back to his community. He was deeply involved in the Spink County Shooting Sports program, where he dedicated countless hours to helping coach and mentor local youth – sharing not only his skills but his patience, encouragement, and kindness. He was so proud when his grandchildren were old enough to be involved. Jim also served as president of the Doland School Board and served on the Clifton Township Board for many years.
Jim cherished his grandchildren, Tayber, Harper, Hayden, Brech, and Chet. They were his whole world and he loved when they would come over to the house. His favorite thing to do was to have birthday suppers for everyone.
Also blessed to have shared in Jim's life are his sister, Connie Vande Pol of Watertown, SD, many in-laws, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Hansen; mother, Rita Hansen-Gisi; parents-in-law, Delmar and Minnie Brech; and brothers-in-law: Roger Vande Pol, Richard Brech, Darrel Brech, and Ron Ranger.
