James Hasleton Obituary

James Duane "Jim" Hasleton

April 8, 1945 ~ August 5, 2025

Centerville, UT-James Duane "Jim" Hasleton passed away August 5, 2025, at home with his family by his side after an extended battle with Alzheimer's. He was born April 8, 1945, at St. Lukes Hospital in Alexandria, Minnesota, to his parents Hubert Clifton Hasleton and Ardes Oma Juliette Shulstad Hasleton.

Jim married Elaine Helgeson, also from Alexandria, in 1971 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have been married nearly 54 years. They lived in Orem, Utah, and Provo, Utah, for eight years and then moved to Louisville, Colorado, for six years before moving back to Utah, to join his family business. Jim and Elaine have three daughters, Solveig, Kari, and Anne-Marie. They also have six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jim grew up in Alexandria, Minnesota, and graduated from Jefferson High School, Class of 1963. Even though he lived the majority of his life in Utah, he always regarded Alexandria as home and was proud to be from Minnesota. He and his seven siblings enjoyed playing outdoors – ice skating, sledding, and riding bikes across the frozen (or not-so-frozen) lakes. He also enjoyed water skiing at his parent's resort, Interlachen Resort on Lake Carlos. He and his siblings worked hard on their parent's farms, at Interlachen Resort, and their Dairy Best located on Broadway.

Jim attended Fergus Falls Junior College and then graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. Degree in Graphic Arts. He utilized these talents in the newspaper production business at the BYU Daily Universe newspaper and the Boulder, Colorado, Daily Camera. He also prepared beautiful, graphically-designed family histories for others, including his own and his wife's genealogies.

In 1986, Jim went into business with two brothers and ran Columbia Water Systems in Murray, Utah. He enjoyed his work and was good at it, and he traveled a lot doing numerous "start-ups" of their equipment, especially in Las Vegas, California, and Japan.

As an expert photographer, Jim took numerous photos of sunsets and sunrises, nature and animal scenes, and family pictures. He was a talented man with a creative mind and could do or fix anything.

Jim served in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 – 1971 at the time of the Vietnam War. He served a major part of his stint in Okinawa, and was glad to do his part to serve his country!

Proud of his Norwegian heritage, he traveled with Elaine to Norway multiple times, primarily visiting ancestral farms and meeting previously-unknown relatives in Hedmark and Telemark counties, as well as Hallingdal. He took numerous high-quality photos there.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Hasleton and Ardes Shulstad Hasleton, and one brother, Richard Hasleton. He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Elaine Hasleton, three daughters, Solveig (Joe) Hoag, Kari (James) Fiagle, and Anne-Marie Hasleton; six grandchildren Megan (Austan) Sorenson, Melanie (Quinn) Pfeifer, Lauren Fiagle, Ian Fiagle, Jaron Fiagle, and Lillian Grace Giebel-Hasleton; and four great-grandchildren Elliott, Junie, Oliver, and Rowan. Jim is also survived by his six siblings, Gayle Hasleton Moore, Beverly Hasleton Mortenson, Perry (Laurie) Hasleton, Hal (Mechel) Hasleton, Susan Hasleton (Mike) Crapo, and Carol Hasleton (Lynn) Olson.
